What Can I Learn in Volume 5?
When you finish Volume 5, you will have developed many of the skills of a college music student beginning their second year. You will be prepared to pass level 12 of the MTNA exams with greater depth and understanding. You will gain experience writing in four parts, learn the rules of harmonic progression, understand the function of each chord, and are able to recognize by sight and sound harmonic progressions using every triad of the major and minor scale.
Upon completion of Volume 5, you will recognize, compose, and harmonize melodies using 15 different scales (including 6 modes, blues, and Hungarian minor)!
Volume 5 focuses on music of the Romantic Period. You will learn about the history of dance, the ballet, the character piece, the art song, song cycles, and oratorio. Inspiring stories and examples continue to be a part of this volume to help the student learn qualities necessary for high achievement on your instrument and in life. Volume 5 is sometimes thought of as the most difficult volume of Excellence in Music, but if a student has achieved 100% mastery of the concepts found in previous volumes, they will find themselves well prepared for the work in Volume 5.
